Where Ash Becomes Sustainable Design

Ronke Ladipo

The Lagos art scene is a hive of talent, but few artists manage to merge vibrant aesthetics with a message of direct impact like Ronke Ladipo. This Nigerian designer and artist is redefining furniture design through a lens of environmental responsibility, transforming what society discards into functional and provocative pieces.

Her latest project, “From Ashes, Design”, is living proof that waste is, in reality, a misplaced resource. This initiative, focused on eco-conscious furniture design, has a goal as necessary as it is bold: to give cigarette butts a second life by converting them into sustainable material.

The collection, which includes a Chair and a Side Stool inspired by the shape of a cigarette, a Stand evoking a cigarette pack, and a large-format Portrait Painting, does not just aim to decorate; it seeks to provoke. Each form invites reflection on the cycle of waste, transformation, and renewal, powerfully suggesting that what once polluted can become purposeful again.

“From Ashes, Design”: The Core Collection

The process behind “From Ashes, Design” is pure circular craftsmanship and ingenuity. Ronke uses sawdust (sourced from MDF boards) mixed with the ashes of recycled cigarette butts to create a unique composite material. This mixture is cast and sculpted by hand, then sanded and finished to achieve a smooth texture that subtly recalls a cigarette. The final touch is provided by the recycled faux leather upholstery, added in strategic sections, offering comfort and aesthetic contrast.

Through her work, Ronke Ladipo not only offers cutting-edge art and design; she provides a palpable vision of the circular economy that Mondo4Africa champions. She reminds us that, with creativity and commitment, any “waste” can rise “From Ashes” to become a new purpose.

A Visit to Her Studio: The Ingenuity of Transformation

We had the privilege of meeting Ronke directly in her Lagos studio, a space that radiates the same creativity and commitment found in her work. It was there that the connection with Mondo4Africa became tangible.

One of the pieces that captivated us, beyond the furniture, was her work with recycled and painted footwear. In fact, we are attaching a picture of Akshay Gwallani holding one of her customized, hand-painted shoes—a testament to the power of her art to transform any discarded item into a statement piece.

Circular Fashion Accessories: Upcycling at its Finest

But Ronke’s ingenuity goes beyond large pieces. Using recovered materials, she handcrafts a unique line of bags and accessories that prove sustainable fashion can be cutting-edge. We will be showcasing some of them in this section of Mondo4Africa.
