What is the circular REvolution?

The Circular Revolution is an international project led by Mondo4Africa that defends human rights through an environmental and social approach, addressing the serious plastic pollution crisis affecting coastal communities in Ghana.

The project connects the right to a healthy environment, clean water, education and decent work, promoting sustainable solutions based on the circular economy and the active leadership of local communities.

What do we want to change?

Structural problem

In Ghana, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches and in coastal communities puts public health, access to clean water and livelihoods at risk, undermining fundamental human rights.

Pollution is not only an environmental issue: it is a matter of dignity, social justice and the right to live in a safe and healthy environment.

Beach clean-ups and community action

Right to a healthy environment

We carry out monthly clean-up activities to remove plastic waste from beaches and coastal communities, reducing risks to health and ecosystems while strengthening citizen participation as a driver of change.

What we will do
1
Coordination with local authorities and community organisations to identify critical areas and plan each clean-up.

Clean-up, collection and sorting of waste to facilitate subsequent recycling.

Installation of clearly signposted collection points and educational messages in the area.
4
Transport of recovered materials to the recycling centre for sustainable management.
Human rights approach: protecting the right to health, clean water and a healthy environment by promoting community participation and inclusion.

🎓

Awareness-raising in schools

Right to education

Educational activities to help children understand the impact of plastic, learn sustainable practices and strengthen their role as agents of change in their community.

What we will do
1
Design of age-appropriate educational materials (activities, games and visual resources).

Workshops on sustainability, the circular economy and responsible waste management.

Creative activities using recycled materials to learn by doing.

Closing session with “commitments” and small actions that can be replicated at school/in the surrounding area.

Recycling and circular economy training

Decent work and inclusion

We train people in waste management and recycling to strengthen local livelihoods, improve the value chain of recovered plastic and open up real opportunities for green employment.

What we will do

Practical training in the separation, treatment and efficient management of plastic waste.

Improvement of recycling centre processes (storage, compaction and logistics).
3
Ongoing support to strengthen local partnerships and secure outlets for recycled materials.
4
Monitoring of processed volumes to adjust and improve efficiency.
Human rights approach: the right to decent work and development, with special attention to women and young people in vulnerable situations.
